GL Coil

Galvalume Coils-GL Coil

Aluzinc (aluminum-zinc alloy coating) is an anti-corrosion treatment process in which a steel sheet is hot-dipped with an alloy coating consisting primarily of aluminum and zinc. Its core characteristic lies in the specific composition of this coating, which provides a dual anti-corrosion mechanism: a physical barrier (from the aluminum) combined with sacrificial protection (from the zinc).

Product overview

Aluzinc (aluminum-zinc alloy coating) is an anti-corrosion treatment process in which a steel sheet is hot-dipped with an alloy coating consisting primarily of aluminum and zinc. Its core characteristic lies in the specific composition of this coating, which provides a dual anti-corrosion mechanism: a physical barrier (from the aluminum) combined with sacrificial protection (from the zinc).

Core Composition
The coating of an aluminum-zinc alloy typically consists of approximately 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon by weight. Silicon is added primarily to inhibit an overly vigorous reaction between the aluminum and the steel substrate, thereby ensuring good adhesion of the coating.

Key Characteristics
  1. Compared to conventional galvanized coatings (which consist almost entirely of zinc), the properties of aluminum-zinc alloy coatings stem from the addition of aluminum;
  2. Dual Protection Mechanism: When the coating is intact, the aluminum on the surface forms a dense aluminum oxide film, acting as a physical barrier. If the coating is scratched, the zinc functions as a sacrificial anode, corroding preferentially to protect the underlying steel substrate.
  3. Enhanced Heat Resistance: It can be used for long periods in high-temperature environments—up to approximately 315°C—whereas the zinc layer on conventional galvanized steel tends to soften or peel off at elevated temperatures.
  4. Superior Corrosion Resistance: At the same coating thickness, its overall corrosion resistance is typically significantly better than that of conventional galvanized steel—in some cases, reportedly several times higher.
  5. Surface Characteristics: It generally features a smooth, silvery-white appearance, often with a distinctive "spangle" (zinc crystal) pattern.
Difference from galvanized steel: The coating on standard galvanized coils consists of pure zinc, whereas the coating on Al-Zn alloy-coated coils (galvalume) is an aluminum-zinc alloy, which generally offers superior overall performance—particularly in terms of heat and corrosion resistance.

Relationship to color-coated Al-Zn alloy coils: An Al-Zn alloy-coated coil (or sheet) serves as the substrate. When an organic color coating is applied to its surface and subsequently cured, it becomes a color-coated Al-Zn alloy coil.
